The word 'ortho' means straight, or true; and the word 'dox' means worship. Ortho-dox therefore means 'True worship'. Orthodox worship is authentic, timeless, and liturgical. The Sunday worship service follows an order established and experienced in the New Testament era.
Many people are surprised to learn that churches mentioned in the New Testament, (like those in Jerusalem, Antioch, and Thessalonica) are still in existence - and they are Orthodox! The Orthodox Church has not strayed from the apostolic foundation, but has remained true to what was taught and practiced from the beginning. There is an unbroken continuity of faith, worship, doctrine, and government established by Jesus Christ, and still present today.
There is only one Orthodox Church, which is administratively organized into several jurisdictions. This is why you will find Greek Orthodox, or Russian Orthodox, and others. The faith, worship, and doctrine is the same; the only thing that is different is the language and the administration. In most countries, there is only one Orthodox administration; but since the U.S. is a nation of immigrants, the situation here is a little different. Our parish is under the administrative jurisdiction of Antioch, where the 'disciples were first called Christians'. (Acts 11:26)
Visitors are welcome to observe and participate in many aspects of the service. Please feel free to visit any time. We would be honored to welcome you.
